international environmental education programme,
environmental management system and award scheme
that promotes and acknowledges long-term, whole
school action for the Environment.
The aim of the
Green-Schools is to increase students’ and
participant awareness of environmental issues
through classroom studies and to transfer this
knowledge into positive environmental action in
the school and also in the wider community.
Schools that have successfully completed all,
the elements of the programme are awarded the
‘Green Flag’.
Transition Year Students
keeping Our Lady's environmentally friendly!

Our Lady’s Secondary School has already
accomplished much success achieving three Green
Flags in the themes of:
- Litter and Waste
- Energy
- Water
The theme of the
current Green School’s Flag is
travel and it seeks
to promote energy efficient modes of transport
that will both work towards promoting student’s
personal health as well as combating the effects
that climate change are having on our Global
Environment. Other initiatives that have been
introduced within the school to coincide with
the pursuit of the Green School’s flag is
-
WOW (Walk on
Wednesday’s – a scheme encourage pupils and
teachers alike to walk or cycle to school
each Wednesday),
-
a poster
competition,
-
environmental
workshops and
-
safety talks.
Transition Years heading off on their guided
cycle on cycle Safety Day organised by Miss
Shalvey.
Miss Shalvey organised a
Cycle Safety Day for a group of Transition
Year students on Tuesday , March 24th, where a
number of Garda visited the school and
spoke to the group of students about all aspects
of cycling safely on our busy roads and the
importance of wearing correctly fitting helmets
and high visibility clothing. They then
brought them on a 4 mile cycle to illustrate what they
had just talked about. The school has
recently put in place a new bicycle shelter to
encourage more students to choose this healthy
way of travelling to school.
