German is spoken by
more than 120 million people in 38 countries of
the world, it is becoming more loved by people in all over the world..gif)
Worldwide, German accounts for the most written
translations into and from a language.
Furthermore it belongs to the three most learned
and to the ten most spoken languages worldwide .
German is liked
by students in Our Lady's Secondary
School. Students describe it as a very
structured and grammatical language. For Junior
and Leaving Certificate
the exam requires that the student can
write a Letter/Postcard, cope with Listening
Comprehension and Reading Comprehension. The
Leaving Certificate also includes an Aural exam.

Students of German held a cake sale on Friday,
11th March to
raise money for the modern
languages department and for
Trocaire.
Students baked lots of delicious Kuchen, Torten
and Kekse and
sold their goods at breaktime and
at lunchtime.
They were delighted with their display and with
the 450 Euro raised.
Well done to all concerned!

STAMMTISCH!

Wann:
Jeden
Freitag
Um wieviel Uhr:
Um 1.10 Uhr
Wo:
In Frau Foxs Raum
Zu Mittag essen
Spaß haben
Und alles auf Deutsch!
Bis dann!
As a result of Noel’s visit to German classes
(Noel Mc Garrell is
studying German and Maths at
Trinity College, Dublin) the
Leaving Cert
students have set up their own Stammtisch (the
regulars table)
Every Friday at lunchtime we meet with our
German teacher
and have our lunch together in Ms
Fox’s room. (Thank you Ms
Fox for having the
kettle boiled for us!)
We have Tee or Kaffee and Ms Horgan usually has
something
nice in the cake tin. Thanks also to
Mrs Kinghan, Alan’s mother
who bakes fabulous
cakes, especially meringues.
Anyway, back to the German. Well, we chat about
everything
under the sun – school, the weekend,
18th birthday parties...!
concerts......... and
all auf Deutsch! The main thing is that we
speak nur Deutsch and it doesn’t matter if we make
mistakes
Thanks for the idea, Noel. It really
worked.....................
Students
Reaktionen!
Probably the best spent lunch times, I found my
German got
much better and the learning process
is made much easier with
Frau Horgan’s baking. I
would definitely recommend it to all
Leaving
Cert. German students. –
Conor
A
brilliant experience. It was a great way to
improve our
German. We were learning German
without even realising it. It
did not feel like
we were working because we were enjoying
ourselves. – Alan

relaxed surroundings. Always good craic and tasty food to be
eaten! We look
forward to every Friday at lunch! Best way to
improve at German! –

German improved a shocking amount. The relaxed
atmosphere
made it much easier to learn and made
us more confident with
our speaking. Definitely
a good idea. – Emma
Stammtisch was an excellent experience, as
speaking German
in a relaxed atmosphere helped
my German to improve greatly.
My confidence with
the language increased immensely. –
Aisling
German Stammtisch was a fabulous idea! It
improved my
German immensely, without any
effort. Even if I wasn’t talking
I was listening
and taking it all in. It was a fun atmosphere to
practise German without the feeling of being
examined. –

Noel’s Besuch in
der Schule

Noel Mc Garrell, student
of German at Trinity College, Dublin visited
all
German classes on 9th of September.
Junior classes showed great interest as he spoke
in simple
German/English about himself and why
he chose German at school
and pursued his
studies of the language
They greeted him and asked simple questions in
German and were
delighted with his responses and
that they were speaking the foreign
language in
a real situation.
Senior classes had prepared questions to
interview Noel and they were
impressed by his
fluency in the target language as he spoke about
·
studying the language at
university
·
his scholarship to Germany last
summer
·
language course in Germany
·
experiences of German life and
culture
He encouraged students to pursue further study
of the language for
many reasons
Ø
Ireland’s role in Europe
Ø
Germany’s central role as one of
leading powers in Europe
Ø
Importance of modern languages
Ø
The job opportunities available
when one has German
A
social aspect of his studies in Trinity is
STAMMTISCH.
Noel explained that German students meet in the
pub every second
Wednesday and speak only German
in a very relaxed and social
environment.
Pupils, especially Leaving Cert students liked
this idea
and as a result set up their own STAMMTISCH.
More about that later.
Also, viel Glück und mach’s gut,
Noel! Komm doch zu uns wieder
zurück!
German Scholarship
I, Aisling Kerr, received a scholarship to
spend 3 weeks (21ST June-
12th
July 2009) in Germany (Deutschland) this summer
on a language
course. I attended school for
3 weeks in a town called Passau on the
German-Austrian border.
Our Itinerary included some of the
following:
We visited Munich

Regensburg

Oberhaus
with great view of Passau
And in Austria: Linz
Famous for its delicious Linzer Torte
We also had a trip to a beautiful little
town called Schärding.

I stayed with a host family during my time
in Germany. This was an
amazing opportunity
to be immersed in the German language and to
experience everyday German life. They were
extremely friendly and
with them, I watched
German television and tasted some typical
German food. I learned so much from them
about their culture.
I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to Germany. I
feel I learned a great
amount of German
(Deutsch), which for me is brilliant as I
love this
subject at school. I enjoyed my
trip to such an extent that I will be
returning to Germany this time to BerIin in
December along with the
Senior History classes. This will be really memorable, I’m
sure, as
Berlin celebrates the 20th
anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
I
am really looking forward to this trip and
my visit to the
Weihnachtsmarkt!

Bayerisches
Frühstuck. (Bavarian breakfast!)(Weißwürste,
Süßesenf und Breze)(white sausages, sweet
mustard and pretzels)
Outstanding Junior Certificate German
Results....
Congratulations to Aisling Kerr who took part in
the Language test in the Goethe- Institiute at
the beginning of April due to her outstanding
German results in her Junior Certificate ,
unfortunately she did not come in the top 5 but
is delighted to be in the next group of 24
students, this meant she had the
opportunity to spend 3 weeks in Germany from June 21st to July 12th.
Apart from her flights all other expenses were
covered. She stayed with a German Host Family
and went to College for 3 hours daily, 5
days a week. Congratulations to both Aisling and her German teacher Ms Treanor.
OUR LADY’S STUDENTS TOUR OF BERLIN
On Saturday the 8th December, 22
students accompanied by their teachers Mrs.
Horgan, Ms. Fox, Mr.Mc Quaid and German
Assistant, Katja set off on a four day
educational tour of Berlin and nearby town of
Potsdam.
On arrival at Schoenefeld Airport in Berlin, the
group was transferred to their Youth Hotel in
central Berlin not far from Tempelhof Airport,
famous for 1948 Berlin Airlift. After a
satisfying typical German breakfast the group
began a short walking tour of the City Centre
before their highly anticipated guided tour of
Germany’s Parliament Building, the Reichstag.
On their way they sampled the atmosphere of the
Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas market) and reached
the Brandenburg gate, a central monument and
symbol of the divided city between 1961 and1989.
The broad avenue of Unter den Linden was vibrant
with Christmas atmosphere and also with the
Global protection protest which students
witnessed firsthand
.
In the Reichstag students listened with
enthusiasm as the guide told them of the history
and architecture of the building, they sat in
the main parliament chamber where Angela Merkel
(Bundeskanzlerin) and political parties
assemble. The group then ascended the
spectacular glass dome of the Reichstag where
they absorbed a panoramic view of Berlin City by
night.
Early on Sunday the group travelled to
Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp-a morbid
reminder of the Nazi Regime where more than
60,000 prisoners perished. The overcast and
drizzly weather conditions seemed appropriate as
students viewed the barracks, gas chamber and
gallows where the execution of Jews and
opponents of the Nazi Regime took place.
The weather improved as the group arrived in
Potsdam, which lies south west of Berlin and is
surrounded by idyllic countryside, lakes and
forests.Potsdam, the former seat of Prussian
Rulers, epitomizes the Prussian spirit of
discipline and stringency, softened by the
elegance of French culture. The Weihnachtsmarkt
where students had lunch and time for shopping
was truly magical. The group then visited
Sans Souci, the summer residence of
Frederick the Great which would remind one of
Versailles, though smaller. The students did
indeed feel ‘sans souci’ (without care) as they
absorbed the relaxing atmosphere of their
environs.
On our return to Berlin we had our evening meal
after which, as an antidote to our culture
filled day, we went bowling on the Ku’damm- Main
St. Berlin.
On Monday after breakfast we met our driver,
Michel and tour guide for the day, Burkart. For
eight hours we clung to his every word as he
brought us on an exciting historical trail of
the former Berlin Wall, Jewish Museum,
Checkpoint Charlie and Eastside Gallery and
Jewish Memorial.
After a short lunch and
shopping break we went to the Olympic Stadium
built for the 1936 Olympic Games during the
reign of Hitler. Hitler would not present Jesse
Owens (African American runner) his four gold
medals since he did not consider him part of
that all-powerful Aryan German super race. Since
then the stadium is host to major football
matches as well as blockbuster bands like U2.

On our way back Burkart casually stopped the bus
to show us the finest specimen of German car
engineering-the Bugatti made by
Volkswagen. The boys not to mention the
girls rushed to get a view and take photos of
€1.2 million masterpiece on wheels. We were
unable to buy a model of this for our Principal,
so bought him instead a model of the Trabant
‘trabi’ (former East German car)-a more fitting
memento of this former divided city.
After this exciting day, followed by dinner, we
still had time to ‘shop til we dropped’ in the
late evening Weihnachtsmarkt. The highlight of
the evening however was the ice rink where
students exhibited their ice skating skills (not
before many falls-none serious, Thank God)

The group departed at noon on Tuesday after a
leisurely stroll, some last minute shopping and
Kaffee und Kuchen in nearby cafe.
We left Berlin –that diverse and vibrant city,
scarred but never destroyed by its dramatic
history- full of emotion and promising to
return, sooner rather than later.
Auf Wiedersehen Berlin-bis zum naechsten Mal
!
