Economics can be defined as the study of the
production, distribution and consumption of
goods and services by society. Issues covered
include:
- Unemployment and recession
- Inflation
- Wages
- Strikes and industrial unrest
- Demand and Supply
- Banking System and Interest rates etc.
- International Trade
It is a very interesting
subject and encourages you to become more aware of the Irish, European and
international economy. Everyone is aware at the moment of the effect the state
of our economy is having on every individual so this subject is very appropriate
and exciting at this time.
Budding Blayney economists
attend ISME conference in Croke Park

Eight senior cycle
students from Our Lady’s Secondary School were
guests at the Irish Small and Medium Enterprise
(ISME) annual conference in Croke Park on Friday
October 3rd. Among those speaking at
the event were leading economists David
McWilliams, George Lee and Alan Ahern. RTE’s
George Lee chaired the event and defied his
gloomy image contributing thought provoking
analysis as well as many witty asides. In
addition, leading entrepreneurs including Jerry
Kennelly and Terry Prone spoke about issues
facing small businesses.
The event included a
lively ‘question and answer’ sessions on a range
of issues particularly the banking crisis.
Indeed, the exchanges between bank
representatives and speakers got very heated as
the subject of support for small business and
the property crisis was addressed.
The Pope’s Children
author David McWilliams’ presentation was the
highlight of the day. The students got to hear
first hand McWilliams’ views on the crisis in a
witty and accessible format. McWilliams has been
credited with first putting forward the idea of
deposit guarantee for banks. He spoke
passionately about the financial crisis
emphasising that the government’s guarantee was
only a starting point to end the difficulties in
the sector. A gifted public speaker, McWilliams
offered the students a comprehensive run down of
what is taking place in the global financial
markets in a very jargon-free manner.
For the students ,
the event was an excellent opportunity to
witness the workings of the business world first
hand. In addition, the students enjoyed the
opportunity to experience the Croke Park
conference facility. The students who attended
were selected on the basis of completing an
essay competition. The 6th years who
attended were Jonathan Hughes, Fintan Treanor,
and Aidan Lynch; From fifth year Ultan Brady,
David Brohan, Irene Brennan and Shane Colton;
and from fourth year Donagh Keenan.
Transition year
student Donagh Keenan speaking about the event
said "it was great to meet and hear the views of
so many top business people. David McWilliams
was just brilliant. He spoke about the banking
crisis in a really simple way that was easy to
understand". Donagh was equally impressed with
the running of the overall event. "It really was
a great experience", he said, "we got to hear
real business people talking about the issues
affecting them and the economy. We have learned
a lot about the banking crisis in economics
class but it was great to listen to the people
who are actually working in the areas of
business."
Paddy Mulroe,
economics teacher at Our Lady’s, echoed Donagh’s
comments saying "it was a great day out for the
students. They got a real insight to the world
of business and economics. Hopefully, some of
the lessons learned on the day will stay with
the students for a while. It was very good of
ISME to allow the students attend the conference
as guests. The event was brilliantly organised
and we got first class treatment. The students
really appreciated the day and were very
grateful to ISME ."
