Our Lady's
Enter Young Scientist's Competition

Biology students
performing demonstrations on Open night

Our Lady’s Secondary School shown here at the
Ulster Regional Finals of the Eco Unesco Young
Environmental Awards. The project was
shortlisted from 90 applicants to present their
project "Human Impact on the Environment". The
project was a culmination of a cross curricular
work of the Transition Year Art, Biology,
Environmental and Geography classes.The project
is a testament of the wide variety of activities
open to our Students in Transition year. The
students devised the theme themselves after
completing projects on Acid rain, Slurry run off
and water systems in Miss Foxes geography
class. When Miss Mc Manus asked the class would
they like to get involved with Eco Unesco they
united all their experiences and decided to team
up with the Art class to make their school aware
of the impact we have on our environment.Their
design is a good v evil theme. on the back of
the costume we see how oil and commercial
pollution leaking into our river systems
coupling with overfishing is destroying the
marine life in our oceans. On the positive side
they show how we can combat this by living a
greener lifestyle using renewable energy can
keep our oceans thriving and healthy.
Biology Treasure
Hunt:
The four
Transition year Biology classes were taken on a
Biology treasure
hunt on Oct 13th/14th
2010. The students were given clues to help them
locate and identify biology related items within
a mile radius of the
school. This event proved
both enjoyable and successful and it has been
decided to hold this event on an annual basis.

Biology, Chemistry
and Physics are all very interesting subjects (which are not compulsory for the students of Our
lady's Secondary School to study.) Students get
the option of doing Biology, Chemistry or
Physics in fourth year and if they decide to do
any or all of these subjects they
can then study it for their Leaving Cert.
What is Biology?
Biology is the study of all living things,
meaning that in Biology students get to go into
great detail on how particular things function
example the eye. Biology can be divided into ten
main areas which include:
Botany: The study of plants
Zoology: The study of animals
Cytology: The study of cells
Biochemistry: The study of chemical reactions
Microbiology: The study of small organisms
Ecology: The study of organisms and there
habitats
Anatomy: The study of cell structure
Genetics: The study of the mechanism of heredity
and variation
Taxonomy: The classification of organisms
Physiology: The study of overall functions
`The course also consists of 22 experiments
which is less than any other science subject.
Biology is a very detailed subject with quite a
vast course to cover but it is an enjoyable
subject at the same time which gives you the
opportunity to learn more about the human
Anatomy through the dissection of several
organs.
